Ashes Ratings and Best XI

Although the one day series isn’t quite finished, the Ashes summer is all but over and I thought I’d give each player a rating as well as give my XI of the series.

Ratings out of 10

England
Adam Lyth – 2 – Batted poorly all series, doesn’t look good enough for the test stage.
Alistair Cook – 7.5 – Starting to look more assured with the bat, good captaincy.
Gary Ballance – 4 – One half decent innings before he was dropped.
Ian Bell – 6 – A couple of half centuries but not usual self, in danger for UAE series.
Joe Root – 9 – Englands man of the series, one of the world’s best.
Jonny Bairstow – 6 – Couple of assured innings, improved the middle order.
Ben Stokes – 7 – Solid with both ball and bat without being spectacular.
Jos Buttler – 5 – Good series with the gloves, but not with the bat.
Moeen Ali – 7 – Took many crucial wickets and a crucial knock in the first test.
Stuart Broad – 8.5 – Very good series with the ball capped off with 8/15.
Mark Wood – 7 – Good pace and control, unlucky not to have more wickets.
Steven Finn – 7 – Bowled well when he was brought into the side.
James Anderson – 7.5 – Until his side strain he was bowling magnificently.

Australia
Chris Rogers – 7.5 – Aussies most consistent batter, now retires.
David Warner – 6 – Showed glimpses of his best but too many silly shots to get out.
Steve Smith – 8.5 – Aussies man of the series, two cracking hundreds.
Michael Clarke – 5 – Poor with the bat, showed his class captaincy though.
Shaun Marsh – 2 – No idea why he was brought in, did nothing.
Adam Voges – 5 – Grew with confidence but still doesn’t look good enough for me.
Shane Watson – 4 – Played poorly, deserve to be dropped.
Mitchell Marsh – 7.5 – Big future all rounder for the Aussies, brilliant with the ball.
Brad Haddin – 5 – Didn’t have time to impose himself.
Peter Neville – 6.5 – Good series, top keeping and showed glimpses with the bat.
Mitchell Starc – 7.5 – Tad erratic but took wickets and got runs, big future.
Mitchell Johnson – 6 – Showed glimpses but not the right pitches for him.
Josh Hazelwood – 7 – Took unnecessary stick in my eyes, took valuable wickets.
Peter Siddle – 7 – Should of called Cummins up instead, but bowled very well.
Nathan Lyon – 7 – Incredibly underrated, good wicket tally and good average.
